These works, the suite of twelve etchings Nara, a close look from afar and the
Todaiji print, were created in 1998 to celebrate the 100th year of Nara Municipality, 25 years of the Kurumaki Studio and the 5th anniversary
of the Canberra Nara Sister City agreement. They have been jointly published by Kurumaki Studio and the artist. It is hoped that the
works may lead the viewer to look behind the well known and spectacular - and more closely at the intriguing but less familiar
sights in Japan's ancient capital. Nara has always been a place of special interest for the artist. 23 years ago he was asked to establish the etching area of Kurumaki Studio, a Centre for Fine Art Printmaking at the foot of the tomb of Empress Saimei, set in the historic surrounding of Asuka. Kurumaki's Lithography and Intaglio Printing expanded over the years: a ceramic studio was added to the complex and a gallery opened earlier in 1998. | |
